Gun Laws Will Not Fix the Problem

With 54 people shot in Chicago over the 4th of July weekend, Michael Reagan wrote:

"The only solution liberals have for ending gun violence in the cities is to take away everybody’s guns. But Chicago already has some of the country’s toughest gun laws. They obviously don’t bother the local drug lords. No one ever wants to address the underlying cause of the violence in our inner cities. It’s not the presence of guns. It’s the absence of fathers in the homes of the gang-bangers who are using guns to shoot each other. The numbers are depressing and well known. Nearly 2 in 3 black children grow up in homes without a father present. One in three Latino kids do.We can thank the liberals and their 1960s welfare programs for many of these broken families.
It was their “War on Poverty” that gave unmarried mothers financial independence, made fathers superfluous and undermined the formation of two-parent families. Fathers were let off the hook for their baby making and disappeared from family life. Mothers and grandmothers raised the children. And when the fatherless boys grew up they did what children born into broken families often do. They went out and found their own substitute families on the streets. We call them gangs."

Citizens Don’t Know What Country We Seceded From In 1776

This is pretty discouraging coming from a country that spends more than any other on education and is yet still ranked 26th in the world.

Sums it Up Pretty Well

If we start removing everything that is offensive to individuals or select groups in our culture, nothing will be left.

God Bless America, really?

I must confess that as I watched the fireworks going off over Liberty University tonight, that I had a knot in my stomach that reminded me that our country is going the wrong way. Not so sure that we can honestly call down our Lord's blessing by uttering the words "God bless America" anymore. Sad day for me personally.

Stanley Trashes Expository Teaching

I like John MacArthur's response, "There’s a serious defect in a so-called minister content to be proud of assembling non-believers and calling them a church. Something deeply wrong there. Modern evangelicalism seems to exhaust every imaginable and unimaginable means to attract and collect non-Christians into a building and then call it a church and call it church growth. Maybe there’s a better way to identify these places, let’s just call them non-churches."

Pride and Power

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭18‬ KJV)

In the life of a believer, when pride enters, power exits.

Not a Surprising Example of Depravity

One Puritan theologian wrote that Puritan boys "were very like other boys, and their wickedness was a continual trouble to theologians of the day who used them as examples of total depravity and unconverted man." Just goes to show you that nothing much has changed.

The Root Problem

James 1:14-16 says, But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (15) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. (16) Do not err, my beloved brethren.

James 4:2a says, You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain.

Also, Proverbs 11:6 says, The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust.

I am reminded of a story as told by radio personality Paul Harvey about how an Eskimo kills a wolf. The account is grisly, yet it offers fresh insight into the consuming, self-destructive nature of sin. "First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. Then he adds another layer of blood, and another, until the blade is completely concealed by frozen blood. "Next, the hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood. He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare. Feverishly now, harder and harder the wolf licks the blade in the arctic night. So great becomes his craving for blood that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue, nor does he recognize the instant at which his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his OWN warm blood. His carnivorous appetite just craves more--until the dawn finds him dead in the snow!"

It is indeed a fearful thing that people can be consumed by their own lusts. Only God's grace keeps us from the wolf's fate.

Transformation

Christ takes each sin, each pain, each loss, and by the power of His cross transforms our brokenness and shame; so that our lives exalt His name. — D. De Haan
