Good Teachers

Titus 2:1 You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.

I'm reading a book right now called "Creative Bible Teaching" and found this applicable to all teachers.
"Good teachers know that they must build on students' prior knowledge and teach in a way that relates to the students' experience. An effective approach to teaching is to start with what a student knows and move to what he does not know. That is true not only in Bible study, but in all kinds of learning situations" (Kindle Locations 4317-4319).

Cultural Jesus

I would highly recommend Francis Chan's book "Erasing Hell: What God Said about Eternity, and the Things We've Made Up" to you. It's a primarily a rebuttal to Rob Bell's "Love Wins". It's a quick and good read. It's also on Kindle.

In he says, "Deep down, we all have a tendency to recreate Jesus in our own image. Before we know it, we have an American Jesus, a Western Jesus, a postmodern Jesus, a hippie Jesus, or a capitalistic or socialistic Jesus. Deep down in the heart of every person is a hidden desire to reinterpret Jesus in light of our own culture, political bent, or favorite theological belief." - Francis Chan (Kindle Locations 560-562).

The Joy of Teaching

Then Jesus took his disciples up the mountain and, gathering them around him, he taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Then Simon Peter said, "Are we supposed to know this?"And Andrew said, "Do we have to write this down?" And James said, "Are we going to be tested on this?" And Phillip said, "Is there an answer guide in the library? or Cliff Notes?" And Bartholomew said, "What came after 'poor'?" And John said, "The other disciples didn't have to learn this?!" And Mark said, "Don't take the overhead off yet." And Matthew went to the bathroom.

One of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus' lesson plan and inquired of Jesus, "Where are your anticipatory set and your objectives in the cognitive domain?"

. . . And Jesus wept.

Pompous Deacon

A rather pompous-looking deacon was endeavoring to impress upon a class of boys the importance of living the Christian life. "Why do people call me a Christian?" the man asked. After a moment's pause, one youngster said, "Maybe it's because they don't know you."

Come, Follow Me

Jesus said in Matthew 4:19 Come, follow me,...

There is a story of a young woman who wanted to go to college, but her heart sank when she read the question on the application blank that asked, "Are you a leader?" Being both honest and conscientious, she wrote, "No," and returned the application, expecting the worst. To her surprise, she received this letter from the college: "Dear Applicant: A study of the application forms reveals that this year our college will have 1,452 new leaders. We are accepting you because we feel it is imperative that they have at least one follower."

The Preacher

I read this on Bro. David Owen's Facebook and just had to share it.

"The Preacher is a special person. He serves a master he has never seen with his eyes. He follows a voice he has never heard with his ears. He walks a path so narrow there is no room for turning around. He lives by a book that was written thousands of years ago. He stands at the cross roads of life and faithfully points the right way to go! He stands between humanity and hell and pleads with sinners to repent! He preaches about a hell he will never see, and a heaven that is already his. He is the target for every demon out of hell and the subject of ungodly gossip. He is hated by many." - Dr. Ed McAbee, Northside Baptist Church, Gaffney, SC

If I Were the Devil

New Shoes

My grandmother once said that every pair of shoes that she bought me put me one step closer to walking out the door. My boys are growing up way too fast, but I know that they are ready for what ever the Lord has for them.
