Nothing But Jesus

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:1-8 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.  (2)  For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  (3)  And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling,  (4)  and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,  (5)  that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.  (6)  Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.  (7)  But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.  (8)  None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Again, Paul didn't come with this great ability to make moving speeches. His ministry was simply to teach the Word of God simply. That's all any preachers call is.That's comforting to me. My effectiveness isn't based on how articulate I am or how I have a deep, commanding speaking voice or how much education I have.

The Bible says in Zechariah 4:6 "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord." Also in Hebrews. 4:12  says, "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

That being said, the Word is alive and active. All that a pastor or teacher should have to do is give it to you!

Why Not?

Someone once asked C.S. Lewis, "Why do the righteous suffer?" "Why not?" he replied, "They are the only ones who can take it."

Religious Humor

A Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at the town's annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter. "This baked ham is really delicious," the priest teased the rabbi. "You really ought to try it. I know it's against your religion, but I can't understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don't know what you're missing. You just haven't lived until you've tried Mrs. Hall's prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?" The rabbi looked at the priest with a big grin, and said, "At your wedding."

Voting for Ourselves

This guy must have been a prophet or just smart enough to see the end result of people voting in their own self-interest. Some would call it individual irresponsibility.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years." - 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville

Almost There?

The Bible states that either God is your father or Satan is your father. Either you are in a relationship with Christ, or you're not; either you are born again, or you're not. You are either God's child, or you are God's enemy; you are either storing up wrath, or you are storing up mercy; you are either heaven-bound, or you are hell-bound. No one is in the middle. No one is "almost there."
